Carson Profile Review (created by lead team)

Weekly folders

  • Bigger issue is consistency of teacher sending folder home on specified day versus tracking which day for which child
  • Fliers should be sent home as previously agreed (if in box by lunch, goes home same day—if after lunch, send home next day)
  • Discussion regarding time of day to check boxes—challenges at any time of day. What is reasonable? Consistency?
  • PROPOSAL: Folders done as a grade level at least once a week on their designated day. APPROVED
  • PROPOSAL: Stuff in boxes the day before it goes home. Teachers WILL check their boxes once a day. Whatever is there goes home that day. APPROVED

School Wide Events:

Curriculum Event in the fall (by grade level?)

· Discussion of venues for sharing out curriculum. Some do on SWIFT site, others send home packets for parent sign-off, put info on SWIFT site for ongoing parent access to grade level curriculum and map for the year

· PROPOSAL: If teachers want to do it as a grade level, that is ok, but for this fall we are not going to have a requirement for all grade levels, but the understanding is that each grade level will be sharing info about the curriculum via SWIFT and printed media for those that need it. APPROVED

Success Night : K-3 or K-6

· Discussion: AWARDS--honoring more kids per class or grade level; tough to choose one child; attendance impact on winners; student recognition event needs more discussion

· Success Night as celebration for kids to share accomplishments for the year; portfolio shows growth over the year—students know how to share what is in their portfolios; be deliberate on what is presented and what it looks like; keep it child centered; consider teacher compensation with time or $ for attendance so all will be there at night event

· PROPOSAL: Success Night will separate out awards piece to some other time TBD regarding format, date, time; Success Night was successful!; remain K-3 or K-6 in May APPROVED as School-Wide event. More discussion needed whether is a subject area focus and planning staggered times for grade level

Diversity Events (honoring cultures, Diversity Day)

· Example: Edgerton had a Fun Run; Garage sale; 4 performing groups doing dances; students did Readers Theater on Rosa Parks (event was on a Saturday); Spinning did an event during the school day where teachers taught a lesson on a different country and students rotated to 4 different presentations with passport; High Schools have done evening presentations with food and costumes, etc.

· PROPOSAL: Having a diversity/international day at Carson APPROVED Non school day, school day, or evening APPROVED for during school day early MARCH close to Miles’s birthday! And not connected to report cards—Format TBD by Diversity Committee

ODA Survey

· Unrepresented parent groups—limited English or non-English speaking group

· Two activities to get them more involved—communicate info in more languages; helping the parents find ways to be active and more connected to school learning community

· How can we help achieve the goals? Provide more translated info; have school contact person to facilitate the parents coming into school to volunteer or be more active in supporting their children (nurture them as volunteers working with parent involvement coordinator); have ELL night early in the year

Carson Giving (non-profit fundraising)

· 3 fundraisers this year, PTA this year: fall, spring, got a little burned out this yr, no fundraiser for 6th grade camp, sp Olympics, well in Africa, leukemia, food drive-required: This year? Decision: PTA 2, 2 from Carson + Food Drive in Nov. 1 buddied up with March Gladness

Impacts on Schedules

·

Bus Transportation changes

· 2/3 of transportation costs to and from are funded by state, district will be providing bus transportation for students living outside of 1 mile radius only. Carson will be 100% “Walking/Driving” school. “Happy Feet” here we come! Suggestions: Walking School Bus, Carpooling… Can PTA help? Recommend Silvercreek HOA meet with PSD transportation, post cards being sent home by PSD, Inform PTA to see what they can do.

Schedules for lunch, specialists, etc. (consider recess then lunch for some grades?)

· Kinder will be adding contact minutes due to state changes, student servers can continue during lunch, maintain recess and lunch back to back schedule, difficult to keep noise down due to such large number of students packed into lunch room

Considerations: Keep grade level pairs, 2-6 would like to try the recess before lunch plan, Arturo is unsure about entire 1st floor eating in rooms. 1st grade would prefer eating first.

Stipends

· Set amount per building, which stipends will we be offering, have clubs and activities scheduled on master calendar prior @ start of year

Can we add a stipend for “homework room/TRY” during recess? Some would like to see $ added to Patrol, kids would like to see a chess club added, battle of the books, math relay? In FPSD, change science club to science fair, student council 1-6 grade involvement

A.R. Review & Rewards

· CLARIFICATION needed, How can we better support 1st grade, Is it a 3? 4? What about this 80%, Recommend: reading buddies for 1st grade to help them test. For Year End… Met goal = 100% of goal, grade levels need to clarify 1’s & 2’s for report card

LAP/Carson Parent Involvement (family reading night)

· May LAP parent survey went home asking questions about Carson and LAP program, 25/75 responded- most were pleased. Parents want to know how they can help their children be more successful in reading. Parent Reading Night? What month would work? What about start with one during first trimester and see about adding more? Held in commons with library open and computers available for testing. Build with diversity rich book baskets, invite public librarian to sign kids up for accounts, coordinate with book fair?

Super Achievers Program

· 6 different categories (academics 4’s and 3’s in core subjects, 20 hrs volunteering, 25 miles on track, participate in 2 clubs/events during yr which are pre-approved, participate in Science Fair, Reflections, and Notable Americans project, citizenship-good role model, no discipline issues. Arturo would like to make amendments: volunteering hours more specific and can only use ½ of patrol time, donate time to help other kids (reading for example), Notable American Project – focus on the kids doing the writing rather than cutting and pasting. Change criteria so that it reflects the students using their own words and eliminating internet “canned” information. Would also like to see KID work rather than PARENT. Maybe teachers can look at final projects to see if it looks like what the child has been producing during the year. Teachers should look over grades. Band/Orchestra can be included as a club/event now that it’s being held as a Zero hour. APPROVED

Recycling/Green school items

· Outside of recycling bins…What can we do? Recycle copy paper, plastic, paper, and aluminum can go into our bins, youngest child paperwork: teachers will ask students who’s the youngest in the family and turn number into office. If you add or subtract a student from classroom teacher will change number on “master” list. Adding recycling to lunchrooms? Can we get 5 more recycling bins?

Banners/Common areas

· Pictures of our own students on banners promoting responsibilities, rights, learning etc. Ask PTA to purchase and have them made at local store at cheaper cost.
